Industrial firms finance a Chair by sponsoring teaching and research.
In return, the industrial sponsor may, for the purposes of internal or external communication, circulate knowledge from the Chair program, owned by the École Polytechnique. In addition, 60% of the donation amount may be deducted from corporation tax, up to a limit of 0.005% of turnover. This directly reduces the amount of corporation tax payable.
A new Chair is created following a meeting between one or more businesses and teachers and researchers from the École Polytechnique with shared interests in an innovative scientific topic.
This type of partnership is long term, with a minimum term of 5 years. The business is a sponsor by virtue of its financial support and becomes a privileged partner of the École Polytechnique, which provides the holder of the Chair with teams of internationally-recognized teachers and researchers, leading-edge equipment and high-quality teaching.
Teaching is based on existing master's and specialized courses, or on specific courses implemented in the context of the Chair. For doctoral programs, the teaching may offer specialist doctoral scholarships in selected areas, and extra seminars.
Implementing these teaching tools brings students selected for their skills and centers of interest into contact with sponsors in search of new talents.
The research topics for the Chair are defined in consultation with the sponsoring business, and in addition to the École Polytechnique's research center, may involve one or more academic partners.
The results are disseminated and publicized by organizing symposia, seminars and international conferences. The international aspect of the topics selected is also promoted by inviting foreign researchers and by publishing results in international reviews.
The Chair is held by an internationally-renowned scientist specialized in the area concerned. He/she runs and implements the teaching and research work defined in consultation with the sponsor, via committees which meet several times a year and develop and manage initiatives adopted in the context of the Chair. The committees include representatives of the sponsors and academic partners, as well as appropriately-qualified external figures.
