Multi-scale modeling of cardiac growth & remodeling- Modélisation multi-échelle de la croissance et du remodelage cardiaque

Cardiac tissue is made of cardiomyocytes (the cardiac cells), extra-cellular collagenous matrix, vasculature, etc., arranged in a highly hierarchical microstructure. The cardiac function and microstructure are closely related, an alteration of the microstructure can modify the cardiac function due to a large number of coupled mechanisms at various spatial and temporal scales. A better understanding of these mechanisms and of their couplings will be very useful to design better diagnosis and treatment of cardiac pathologies.

No model has, to this day, been able to link the micro-organization of the passive cardiac tissue to it’s macro mechanical properties. Yet, such a multiscale model would be able to predict the changes in the cardiac function due to alterations in its microstructure.
