Concepts and Methods for a Digital Society

Award-winning 3D
Our company produces an increasing number of three-dimensional objects (3D). Representing and handling objects has become almost mundane in many areas of industry and science, as well as everyday life. In this context, Maks Ovsjanikov from the Computer Science Laboratory (LIX), and Frédéric Chazal from Inria, received the Google Research Award for their work. This award will enable them to develop tools and methods for analyzing large databases of 3D shapes. This will make it possible to find 3D shapes in the same way as images can currently be found, and to use databases containing 2D images, text, and 3D objects all at once.

Geolocation and privacy
The geolocation capabilities offered by personal devices such as smartphones allow unknown servers to easily collect large amounts of information about users' locations. This raises serious questions about privacy. The Computer Science Laboratory (LIX) has developed a new technique for disrupting geolocation called geo-indistinguishability. This device protects the exact location of users while allowing them to use space-time applications due to the approximate location information on the user. Out of all of existing devices, this new mechanism provides the best guarantee of privacy and offers the same level of usefulness.
