Declan Mc Cavana Member of the most excellent order of the British Empire

Declan Mc Cavana, who teaches English at École Polytechnique, was made Member of the most excellent order of the British Empire.

Declan Mc Cavana, who has been teaching English at École Polytechnique for twenty-five years and who was Vice-President of the Languages and Cultures Department, was made Member of the most excellent order of the British Empire to honor the work he's done. The celebration took place on Tuesday, 27th October 2015, at Buckingham Palace in London. The decoration was given to him by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and grandson of Queen Elizabeth.

"I am very honored to receive this award for having contributed to the promotion of English language in France", said Declan Mc Cavana. "I have been teaching English at École Polytechnique for twenty-five years and l'X was the first institution in France to use the technique of oral debating to learn English. This technique is now used in other Grandes Ecoles, in universities and high schools and is very popular among students. It is also used to learn other languages such as German, Spanish and French. I am very proud to know that École Polytechnique started this tradition".

A Graduate of Trinity College of Dublin, Declan Mc Cavana is also President of the French Debating Association. As such, he gathers students from about twenty different French Grandes Ecoles and universities for debating competitions in English. The teacher also coaches École Polytechnique students who participate in these competitions every year.
