Marc Rosso Appointed Head of Entry Examinations at École Polytechnique

Marc Rosso has been appointed Head of Entry Examinations at École Polytechnique, effective as of September 1, 2021. He takes on the role previously held by Michel Gonin, now co-director of ILANCE, a new international laboratory for Physics of the “two infinites” in Tokyo.

Appointed Head of Entry Examinations at École Polytechnique, Marc Rosso is in charge of piloting and implementing the overall strategy of the Concours d’admission Department (DCA). The DCA is attached to the Academic and Research Department of École Polytechnique. After graduating from École Normale Supérieure (ENS) of Paris in 1986, Marc Rosso turned to research in Mathematics. Appointed research fellow in 1988 at the French CNRS within the Center for Applied Mathematics (CMAP) at École Polytechnique, he completed his doctoral thesis in 1990 and obtained his Accreditation to Direct Research (HDR) a few months later. In September 1990, he went to the United States to conduct research at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked until August 1992. He was awarded the Bronze medal from the CNRS in 1991. Upon his return to France, he became University Professor at the University of Strasbourg, where he was nominated junior member of the Institut Universitare de France (IUF) in 1994, as well as Lecturing Professor at École Polytechnique, a position he held until 2004.
 
In September 2000, he joined Université Paris 7 (now Université de Paris) as a Professor, assigned with an 8-year agreement with ENS, where he became the Director of the Department of Mathematics and Applications (D.M.A) until 2008. In 2009, he was appointed Head of the Master 2 in Fundamental Mathematics program at Université Paris 7. From 2010 to 2018, he headed the Paris-Centre Federation of Mathematical Sciences, and from 2014 to 2019, he chaired the Posts Commission at Université Paris 7, of which he was also a member of the Research Commission. From 2011 to 2014, he became Head of the Paris Graduate School of Mathematics program of the Foundation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris (FSMP). In 2020, he was appointed Associate Dean of Finances and Resources of the Faculty of Science at Université de Paris, in charge of Objectives and Resources Contracts.

Marc Rosso maintains solid interactions with China. In 2005, he co-founded the Franco-Chinese collaborative program in Mathematics between Sun Yat-sen University (Canton) and ENS. He was appointed High End Foreign Expert at Sun Yat-sen University in 2013 as well as at East China Normal University (Shanghai) in 2016. In 2015, he helped with the creation of the Franco-Chinese International Associated Laboratory (LIA) in Fundamental Mathematics, for which he was the French coordinator. Since January 2019, he is the Executive Director of the Education Committee of the China-France Mathematics Talent Class cooperation program between the University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei), the Mathematical Foundation Jacques Hadamard (FMJH), and the Foundation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris (FSMP).

He has extensive experience within entry examination committees: He was a member of the jury then Vice-President of the jury of the External Aggregation of Mathematics in the 90s, oral examiner of Mathematics at ENS from 1998 to 2000, and Vice-President of the jury (2002-2012), President of the jury (2013-2016), then Vice-President of the jury once again (since 2017) of the Internal Aggregation of Mathematics. He was also an interviewer for the Mathematics oral exams of the École Polytechnique entrance examinations for various entry tracks (French and international), and coordinator of the examination committees (oral) of the French Higher School Preparatory Classes (CPGE) of entrance exams since 2015.
