A MODERN HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE, FROM THE BIG BANG TO THE PRESENT DAY... AND BEYOND

Yann Mambrini

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2023 FROM 5PM TO 6:15PM

PIERRE FAURRE LECTURE HALL - ÉCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE

Modern cosmology is a precision science capable of accurately describing the evolution of the Universe on a wide range of scales, from microscopic to astronomical. Recent discoveries of the accelerating cosmic expansion, the Higgs boson, gravitational waves and black holes now give us a global vision of the history of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the present day. In this colloquium, which is aimed at a wide audience, Yann Mambrini will review the key stages that enabled these discoveries, from inflation to the dark matter hypothesis, via primordial nucleosynthesis, for which we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the seminal « a-b-g » article. He’ll be presenting the most recent results, travelling through the twists and turns and paradoxes of relativity and quantum physics, in an exciting journey through time.
