- Distinguish between a disciplinary approach and a competency-based approach;
- Identify the quality criteria for implementing the competency-based approach.
Description
The competency-based approach involves structuring a training program—both in terms of organizing teaching units and assessment—with a focus on developing competencies (not just knowledge and skills) at the core of teaching and learning processes.
Initially perceived as a constraint due to reforms or directives from bodies such as the CTI (Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur), institutions had no choice but to adopt this approach. Over time, however, feedback has revealed undeniable benefits, positioning the competency-based approach as a lever to:
- Better align training programs with socio-economic expectations;
- Ensure that taught content corresponds more closely to expected competencies;
- Rethink how learning assessments are conducted.
