1974-2024: 50 Years of the Angoulême Festival

Through its new "Regard sur" at the reception, the library of École Polytechnique celebrates the 50 years of existence of the Angoulême Festival and sheds light on the captivating world of comics.

With a special selection of comics, it aims to provide the audience with the opportunity to (re)discover this graphic art while showcasing the most remarkable and awarded works at the festival.

Since its modest beginnings in 1974, the International Comics Festival of Angoulême has evolved to become a must-attend event for enthusiasts of the ninth art. Initiated by Francis Groux and Claude Moliterni, the festival was created with the goal of highlighting comics as a major art form capable of competing with other artistic expressions.

The first edition in January 1974 brought together a modest number of authors and enthusiasts, establishing from the beginning an atmosphere conducive to exchanges between artists and the public.

Over the decades, the Angoulême Festival has undergone significant developments, notably with the introduction of the "Fauves" in 1989, thereby reinforcing its recognition in the world of comics. The international character of the festival has also been affirmed, attracting authors from around the world to participate in exhibitions, book signings, and meetings.

Despite the challenges faced over the years, the Angoulême Festival has managed to reinvent itself to remain relevant.

Thus, the festival remains a global pillar of comics, celebrating the creative richness of the ninth art every year and providing a unique platform for artistic expression and the discovery of new talents.
