Intratumoral heterogeneity is a common phenomenon in most human cancers. During the last years, intratumoral heterogeneity became one of the hottest topics of modern oncology, because of its crucial role in therapy resistance and prognosis, emphasizing the need to develop methods to analyse this diversity in cancer biopsies. We focused our work on breast cancer,  where tumors display tubular, alveolar, solid, trabecular, and discrete morphological structures, which can be analyzed by laser-assisted microdissection. The structures are composed of transcriptionally distinct tumor cell populations with various degrees of epithelial-mesenchymal transition and stemness. Through differential expression of genes encoding drug resistance, cancer invasion and and various factors promoting the premetastatic niche, these various morphological stuctures are prognostic factors associated with metastasis formation and predict the  chemotherapy response of breast cancers.
