École polytechnique is taking a further step in the implementation of its Climate Plan. At the start of the 2024 academic year, it will be launching a new course on sustainable engineering coordinated by Céline Guivarch, an economist, climate change specialist at École des Ponts and writer for the IPCC.

This 40-hour course, entitled "Engineering Sustainability, engineering for the long haul", is aimed at second-year students of the Cycle ingénieur polytechnicien program. Its objective is to give them a systemic vision of the major challenges of sustainability, and to equip them with the knowledge they need to tackle them.

"École Polytechnique trains high-level engineers and scientists capable of embracing the challenges of decarbonization and the transitions it implies. This new course, particularly innovative in its pedagogy, will enable them to acquire a systemic vision of environmental issues, as well as the scientific skills needed to take action", declared Laura Chaubard, Managing Director and Acting President of École Polytechnique.

Designed with the contribution of eight education and research departments at École Polytechnique, specializing in complementary scientific disciplines, this course is structured around lectures combined with group work modules.

Designed to be interdisciplinary, it will cover a wide range of topics, from biodiversity to climate, and will combine physics, mechanics, chemistry and biology with history, economics and management.

The course is part of École Polytechnique's Climate Plan, launched in January 2022 and now in its third year of implementation.

Built around 10 five-year objectives, École Polytechnique’s Climate Plan integrates sustainable development issues into the fundamental missions of education, research, innovation and the operation of the School’s campus.
