The McCall MacBain scholarship at McGill University was opened to non-Canadiens students for the first time in 2023. Elsa Tanré, a third-year student in École Polytechnique’s Ingénieur program (X20), is one of the first international finalists to benefit from the scholarship.

The CA$20,000 scholarship grant will cover her tuition fees of approximately CA$10,000 and a large part of the living expenses during her studies at the prestigious university in Canada.

To enable students of the Ingénieur Polytechnicien program to specialize in a particular domain, École Polytechnique offers them the possibility to pursue their 4th-year studies in a Master's program at a partner institution in France or abroad. Driven by her interest in biomedical engineering, Elsa Tanré chose the Biological and Biomedical Engineering Master's program at McGill University.

Research focused

"McGill's master's programs offer a possible specialization on 'tissue engineering', a field I'm particularly interested in," explains Elsa Tanré, adding that she "also chose this master's degree as it grants high importance to acquiring research practice during the program. It comprises conducting research in one of McGill University's laboratories for eighteen months.

In addition to financial support, the McCall MacBain scholarship program provides recipients with a leadership development program, in line with the scholarship's motto, "leading with purpose".

Beyond academic excellence, the program pays particular attention to the candidates' commitment to the community, whether they have already demonstrated leadership potential and their inner drive to make a positive impact in other people’s lives.

The jury hence showed a particular interest in Elsa Tanré's first-year internship "with the Paris fire brigade as a supervisor of a rescue and first aid vehicle" and her volunteer work during her studies with the association CheerUp to visit young cancer patients at Gustave Roussy hospital. Also, very invested in the student life at École, Elsa Tanré played an essential role in "the production of the musical 'The Great Gatsby' in 2022 with 14 other [of her] classmates".

Each year's McCall MacBain scholarship beneficiaries form a cohort and undertake the leadership development program together, parallel to their various Master's degree studies at McGill University.
