A dialogue between students and professionals to discover quantitative careers in finance

The Financial Risk Chair, hosted by the Risk Foundation, led by Nicole El Karoui, professor emeritus at Sorbonne University, alongside Huyên Pham, professor at École Polytechnique, and supported by Société Générale, École des Ponts, École Polytechnique and its Foundation, and Sorbonne University, offers an excellent teaching program combining mathematics and finance. It provides students with unique opportunities to meet key players in the financial markets and discuss the place and role of quantitative profiles.

Led by Huyên Pham, professor at École Polytechnique, alongside Nicole El Karoui, professor emeritus at Sorbonne University and an iconic figure in financial mathematics, the Financial Risk Chair aims to develop numerical methods for calculating and managing risk for financial institutions, while offering excellent teaching at École Polytechnique, notably the Master 2 Probability and Finance program.

As part of this program, students recently took part in a meeting organized in October at Société Générale, bringing together researchers and professionals to discuss the challenges and prospects of quantitative professions. Nicole El Karoui opened the session by emphasizing the importance of solid quantitative training and the need to encourage women to enter these professions of the future.

Hatem Mustapha, co-head of global market activities at Société Générale, shared his strategic vision of the role of quantitative profiles in the markets, while Manuel Huyet, deputy global head of R&D, presented students with the various career paths and prospects in this field.

Huyên Pham, Chair holder, emphasized that the Master 2 Probability and Finance program combines theoretical rigor with an openness to practical applications, and pointed out that exchanges between students and industry professionals provide a better understanding of how technological innovations, particularly artificial intelligence, are transforming the finance industry.

These exchanges illustrate the Chair's essential role as a bridge between academic research and professional practice, supporting the development of skills and careers in the sector.

Among the students, Khadija Chgoura (X2022), currently in her fourth year at École Polytechnique and participating in the M2 program, perfectly illustrates this dynamic. She explains that she chose this master's program for its reputation, its extensive network, and the exceptional quality of its faculty. According to her, the program not only offers high-level training, but also stimulating exchanges with academic and professional speakers, concrete support for professional integration, and access to an active community of talent in finance.

When you arrive at engineering school, you go from a very structured environment in preparatory classes to one where you finally have to choose a direction, and that's not easy. Meetings with professionals, such as those organized by the Chair, help to break down certain preconceived ideas about different fields, particularly finance, and make it much easier to chart your own course.

The Financial Risks Chair fully embodies its mission: to offer students privileged access to dialogue between the academic and professional worlds, to inspire quantitative careers, and to train the talents who will shape the finance of tomorrow.
