Six École Polytechnique students participate in the Tsinghua Summer School

Six École Polytechnique students were awarded scholarships and invited to take part in the Tsinghua International Summer School that takes place from July 16th to July 27th in Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The Chinese leading university Tsinghua and key partner of l’X organizes a Summer School to give students from all around the world the opportunity to discover the university’s expertise in different fields and to explore China. The Summer School is a two-fold program composed of classes and cultural activities. Students choose the academic field they want to study among 13 subjects such as Economy, City development and Environment, Innovation, Education, and Humanities, etc.

Among the six admitted students, three are Ingénieur Polytechnicien students, Léa Dubois, Charles Madeline-Dérou and Meryem Ben Dhiaf, and three are Bachelor students, Diakhere Gueye, Assia Benachir and Damien Bradelle. This unique academic experience will be the first trip to China for all of them.

“Going to China is for me a wonderful opportunity to learn about its industrial development, and to understand how Chinese digital capabilities have taken up many economic and social challenges. Visiting leading companies and meeting skilled specialists will surely provide me with valuable insights into the fast growing Chinese digital infrastructures. I also intend to enjoy the Chinese culture during this fifteen-day summer school in Beijing. Of course, I hope to meet many international students who will be as enthusiast as I am, share experience and broaden our views,” said Charles Madeline-Dérou.

The event also aims at enabling students from all around the world to experience the Chinese way of life. That’s why the Tsinghua International Summer School emphasizes the discovery of the cultural and daily life through excursions, on-site trips and many cultural activities. More than just a theoretical approach, this Summer School aims at broadening student’s minds about the “real” China.

Damien Bradelle, a Bachelor student, is very excited about this Summer School: “I’m ecstatic about discovering the Chinese culture. We are going to learn a lot of new things and to enrich our perception of the world so it’s amazing! However, I’m quite stressed because I’ve never been in Asia and I don’t know what is going to happen. So I feel excited and a bit stressed. Hopefully, I’m not alone and I’m looking forward meeting the Ingénieur Polytechnicien students and travel with my fellow comrades!”

“I have chosen to participate to the Tsinghua Summer School program because it seemed to me like an extraordinary opportunity to discover a whole new world, a new culture and meet people from all over the world at the same time”, said Meryem Ben Dhiaf. “I am really excited about this experience.  I feel enthusiastic and I am now at the airport looking forward to arriving to Beijing and discovering the city and the University. I chose the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” because I want to discover this field and learn a lot about it. I am sure that this program will come with plenty of surprises and that I will spend two incredible weeks.”

“I have never had the chance to travel so far from home before today, and I feel very lucky to be able to take part in this Summer School”, confesses Assia Benachir. “I cannot wait for it to begin! I also look forward to documenting this trip in a travel diary, as I am certain I will want to keep these memories forever.”

Diakhère Gueye is also very excited about this opportunity. “I think that it's a good way to discover China beyond the stereotypes and have a better understanding of the Chinese culture.  I hope that I will also meet people from different horizons.”

Moreover, École Polytechnique and Tsinghua University are long-term partners. L’X and Tsinghua University signed a double degree agreement in 2004 and each year, around 25 Chinese students join the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program. According to the Times Higher Education ranking, Tsinghua University is the 14th best university in the world and the 2nd in Asia
