Four gold medals and one silver medal for École Polytechnique at the 2026 IMC

Four Cycle Ingénieur polytechnicien students participated in the 2026 International Mathematics Competition, held in Bulgaria from July 27 to August 2. They once again distinguished themselves with their excellent results, winning four First Prizes, including a Grand First Prize awarded to Georges Tézé, who ranked 5th overall. A fifth Cycle Ingénieur polytechnicien student, Aymane Bouhsain, also won a silver medal.

This year, École Polytechnique was represented by students from the Cycle Ingénieur polytechnicien program at the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC), a leading international competition that brings together students from universities around the world each year to tackle advanced mathematical problems. Held in Bulgaria, the 2026 edition once again allowed École Polytechnique’s representatives to excel in the individual rankings.

Amongthe members of École Polytechnique’s delegation were Pierre Odend’hal (X25), Paul Perrier (X24), Georges Tézé (X25), and Melvil Treilleux (X25). All four received a First Prize, awarded to the top performers in the competition. With 82 points, Georges Tézé stood out in particular by placing 5th overall, thereby earning a Grand First Prize.

The three other participants from École Polytechnique also performed very well. Melvil Treilleux scored a total of 65 points and ranked in the 40th–46th group, while Pierre Odend’hal and Paul Perrier scored 59 and 58 points, respectively, placing them in the 69th–74th and 75th–85th groups.

Another student from École Polytechnique, Aymane Bouhsain, also took part in the competition and was awarded a Second Prize, with 53 points. In total, five students from École Polytechnique are among the winners of the IMC 2026.

A training organized by the Department of Mathematics

Each year, the Department of Mathematics at École Polytechnique organizes a delegation of students from the engineering program and the bachelor’s program to enable them to participate in this international competition.

This participation is part of the Department’s commitment to promoting excellence in mathematics and enabling students to compare their knowledge and problem-solving methods with those of participants from the world’s top universities.

The 2026 delegation was led by Hadir Taleb, a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics. The students were prepared by Dimitri Korkotashvili, also a teaching assistant in the Department, under the supervision of Siarhei Finski, a faculty member and researcher at the Laurent Schwartz Center for Mathematics (CMLS) and the Department of Mathematics.

Through their consistent performance and achievements, the students at École Polytechnique thus demonstrate the quality of their mathematical education and confirm École Polytechnique’s standing among the international academic institutions participating in the International Mathematics Competition.
