Hugging Face Joins Nvidia: Two X2003s at the Heart of the Open AI Boom

Nvidia announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue and two X2003 alumni—Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf—the French startup has become, in just a few years, one of the world’s leading platforms dedicated to open artificial intelligence models.

Hugging Face enables researchers, developers, and companies to share, test, customize, and deploy AI models, as well as datasets and applications. The platform currently hosts more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications, and has a user base of more than 18 million developers, researchers, and creators. More than 200,000 companies also use its services.

The company has made a name for itself in particular thanks to its approach based on openness and the sharing of resources. Unlike companies that primarily develop proprietary models, Hugging Face provides an infrastructure that enables a broad community to contribute to their development and make them accessible and adaptable. This trend has gone hand in hand with the rise of so-called “open source” or “open weight” models, which are playing an increasingly important role in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.

Two of the three co-founders are graduates of École Polytechnique

Two of its three co-founders, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf, are graduates of the École Polytechnique, both from the class of X2003. They brought their expertise in computer science and artificial intelligence to the entrepreneurial venture and contributed to the platform’s technological development.

Julien Chaumond played a key role in the creation and development of the software tools that helped make Hugging Face a widely used infrastructure within the AI community. Thomas Wolf, an expert in natural language processing and machine learning, played a major role in the development of the Transformers library, which has become one of the leading open-source libraries used for language and artificial intelligence models. Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf are notably listed among the authors of the Transformers project.

The careers of these two engineers thus illustrate the contribution of École Polytechnique graduates to the emergence of global technology leaders in the field of artificial intelligence.

A New Milestone for Open AI

For Nvidia, the acquisition of Hugging Face is one of its most significant transactions and strengthens its presence beyond just processors and computing infrastructure. In particular, the U.S. company plans to leverage the community and tools developed by Hugging Face to support the adoption of open AI models.

Nvidia clarified that Hugging Face would remain an open platform and that users would continue to be free to choose their own models, frameworks, cloud providers, and computing infrastructure. The company thus intends to continue its mission of expanding access to artificial intelligence technologies.

With this transaction, the entrepreneurial venture launched in France by three French founders—including two engineers from École Polytechnique—has reached a new milestone and reaffirms the role that open technologies play in the ongoing transformation of artificial intelligence.
