The École Polytechnique Foundation (also known as FX) was established in 1987 by twenty major French corporations, acting on the initiative of École Polytechnique Board of Directors, with support from the École Polytechnique Alumni Association (AX).
> Role and missions
The Foundation's role is to help École Polytechnique, its students and its teachers and researchers to build closer relations with the corporate sector. Its seeks to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and research, to support the educational approach, and ensure equal opportunities and the success of l'X both in France and internationally. Its main mission is to finance the École's development.
The Foundation was recognized as a non-profit association by the French Decree of 23 June 1987, published in the French Official Journal of 24 June 1987, and is authorized to receive gifts, legacies and other donations from both natural persons and businesses, who can take advantage of the associated tax benefits.
It enables funds to be collected from individuals and businesses to benefit École Polytechnique students, teachers and researchers as well as support its infrastructure development.
Denis Ranque (X 1970), Chairman of the Board, is assisted by Jean-Bernard Lartigue (X 1965), Executive Director. The Foundation staff also includes about fifteen alumni volunteers, mostly issued from the private sector. The Foundation is supported by a permanent and administrative staff and an expert fundraising team.
To meet its aims, the École Polytechnique Foundation relies on various resources:
- The fund-raising campaign;
- Grants from founding and associate businesses;
- Agreements for teaching and research Chairs made between École Polytechnique and businesses of which the Foundation is a partner;
- Private companies, through sponsorship operations for master's degrees or doctorates, financed by business patrons as a form of sponsorship.
École Polytechnique's fund-raising campaign supports the development of l'X in three main areas: research and innovation, international reputation, and equal opportunities. An initial campaign, led by Claude Bébéar (X 1955) was launched in 2008 and collected €35.2M in gifts and undertakings, thanks to the generosity of over 3,000 donors, including parents, students, alumni and friends of l'X.
> Two international bodies
The Foundation has a campaign committee in France, and also two sister bodies abroad: the Friends of Ecole Polytechnique in the United States, and the Ecole Polytechnique Charitable Trust in the United Kingdom.
