L'X, fourth best small university worldwide
Times Higher Education (THE) published its "small universities" ranking for the second time on Tuesday, March 7th, 2017. Among the institutions with fewer than 5000 students, École Polytechnique is ranked fourth worldwide
Times Higher Education (THE) published, on March 7th, 2017, the second edition of its ranking dedicated to "small universities" worldwide. These "human-sized" universities host fewer than 5,000 students, while developing multidisciplinary academic research.
This year, École Polytechnique takes 4th place, after Caltech, École Normale Superieure, and Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea. In total, three French institutions are on the list: École Normale Supérieure (2nd), École Polytechnique (4th) and Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (7th).
This ranking makes these institutions more visible: only twenty universities of this size are thus present in the World University Rankings 2015-2016. Compared with institutions such as Harvard or Shanghai Jiao-Tong University, which host more than 20,000 students and more than 30,000 students respectively, small universities are characterized by moderate enrollments. The limited size has also its advantages. Thanks to their limited number, students benefit from close contact with teachers and classmates, a privileged attention on the part of the teaching and administrative staff, but also a greater facility to develop solid links and a spirit of cohesion among them.
