ELSE: the ethical and fair student association at l’X
ELSE is a local, socially responsible and ethical grocery held by Ingénieur Polytechnicien students which sells essential products, mainly food, which are mostly locally produced in Plateau de Saclay and Vallée de Chevreuse, where l’X is located.
This student association was created in 2007 and its aim is to promote the local agriculture and the home consumption. Students sell various products, such as bread, honey, dairy products, and also fruits and vegetables from the local farms…
Recently, ELSE decided to create a community-supported agriculture (AMAP in French), a system that connects the local producer and consumers within the food system more closely. The producer is committed to providing weekly a basket of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Students of ELSE are partners of Le Potager de l’Epinay, an organic agriculture directed by two brothers near Rambouillet, in the Yvelines department. The system is beneficial for everyone: it allows the producer to sell in great quantity and thus to reduce food waste. Thus, students, researchers and staff of l’X can get seasonal and fresh fruits and vegetables at a very reasonable price.
Members of ELSE create thus an occasion to buy affordable and healthy products, and also a convivial moment to share some tips or recipes with their comrades! Moreover, once a year, the farmers from Le Potager de l’Epinay host visitors from l’X in order to show them their work thanks to collaboration with ELSE.
« As members of ELSE, we are proud to contribute both to a more ethical and environmentally responsible consumption for the students and staff of l’X and to the support of local farmers. By connecting people who want to eat healthy and authentic products with farmers who sometimes struggle to sell their products despite their great quality, we hope on the one hand to reduce food isolation on the campus of l’X and on the other hand to raise awareness of home consumption, which we are committed to promote. »
