L'X and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology signed 3 agreements
On the occasion of the visit of the President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, to France and of the 2015-2016 France – Korea year, École Polytechnique and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) signed three cooperation agreements regarding higher education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Respectively ranked 40th and 43rd best international universities by the QS World University Ranking 2015/2016, École Polytechnique and KAIST signed, on the occasion of the presidential visit to France on June, 3rd, three academic and entrepreneurial cooperation agreements.
Mutual support for innovation and entrepreneurship
Both l’X and KAIST foster innovation and entrepreneurship as a strategic priority. In this context, the two institutions signed an agreement on collaboration in order to promote entrepreneurial mind and innovation among their students. This cooperation takes the form of a collaborative platform « Global Center for Open Research with Enterprises » (G-CORE).
G-CORE aims at setting up entrepreneurial programs through academic collaborations (students exchanges, summer schools, one-time events as hackathons) and exchange of best practices as well as networking; so start-ups and entrepreneurs can benefit from the partner’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Moreover, the launch of this platform will tighten relations between KAIST and École Polytechnique labs and develop specific research projects involving both institutions and their corporate industrial partners. The exchanges of good practices will stimulate and support technologies transfers.
L’X and KAIST already identified fields of cooperation:
- artificial intelligence;
- interdisciplinary health care technology;
- clean energy and environmental technologies;
- management and design of complex industrial system;
- additive manufacturing;
- smart materials.
Supporting and strengthening academic cooperation
École Polytechnique and KAIST also signed a Memorandum of Understanding and an agreement on student exchange. In addition to the double-degree agreement, students from both institutions can participate in a non-degree student exchange program. Eligible students are students from l’X enrolled in the “Ingénieur Polytechnicien program” and those from KAIST enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree. The duration of stay shall be from 4 months to one full academic year. Both institutions agree on the possibility for students to apply for a research internship in their labs. Each student will have two research supervisors from l’X and KAIST.
The signature of these three agreements demonstrates École Polytechnique’s and KAIST’s shared will to develop their academic collaborations. Jacques Biot, President of École Polytechnique, was invited as plenary speaker at KAIST International Presidential Forum "Seeking a New Model of Research Universities in New Era" last April. He ended the conference by giving a keynote speech on the theme “How to get ready to the new 4.0 industry area?”
