On January 13th, 2016, Yves Demay, Director-General of École Polytechnique and Olivier Lesbre, Director-General of the ISAE group signed a strategic partnership agreement in presence of Laurent Collet-Billon, General Delegate for Armaments.
This agreement specifies the conditions under which the two institutions define and implement a common strategy to enhance their performance and development. This partnership is in line with the engagement letter delivered by the Minister of Defence to the President of École Polytechnique on the occasion of his visit on December 15th, 2015. Respecting the governance of both institutions, a steering committee and a strategic committee are created to lead and supervise the partnership. These committees will monitor the implementation and development of shared actions in academic affairs, research, as well as economic and international development.
Shared academic programs
École Polytechnique and the ISAE group intend to mutually leverage areas of expertise and specific academic strengths of the partner institution. Exchanges of students will be facilitated through the development of shared academic programs between the two institutions. Students of the ISAE group will be able to take advantage of double degree agreements allowing them to integrate Master's and graduade degree programs offered at l'X. École Polytechnique and the ISAE group will also work at recruiting together top-level international students, through a joint competitive written and oral entrance exam, highly selective.
The two institutions also wish to develop new programs together. This partnership will allow them to share their expertise on developing courses on entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as supporting student entrepreneurship. École Polytechnique and the ISAE group will develop specific double degree and joint degree programs, aimed in particular at high-potential international students. The agreement also favors academic cooperation in executive education and e-learning, with the development of a joint MOOCs offer.
Strengthening cooperation in research partnerships
This partnership agreement aims at strengthening cooperation between research teams through the development of a coordinated research strategy between the laboratories from the two institutions.
In research, the partnership will cover the areas of expertise of each partner and will focus on interdisciplinary topics that address societal and scientific issues, such as:
> eco-design and manufacture of transportation systems;
> energy management respectful of the environment;
> digital revolution of design patterns, production, supervision and conduct of systems and processes;
> engineering of complex systems;
> innovative materials;
> the challenges linked to space;
> networks, social organization and management of innovation.
In particular, the ISAE group and École Polytechnique will combine their efforts to develop new synergies with ONERA. This cooperation will involve partnership research projects that can benefit from the skills of ONERA teams working with the laboratories of the two institutions, in conjunction with the CNRS, the French National Research Center.
This strategic partnership also aims at creating new Academic and Research Chairs with companies. The creation in April 2015 of the "Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship" Academic and Research Chair, involving École Polytechnique, ISAE-SUPAERO and their respective Foundations, Zodiac Aerospace and BNP Paribas, is a first example of an initiative that both l'X and the ISAE group are looking to develop. As part of their fundraising policy and on specific topics, the Foundations of the two institutions will thus cooperate and present a common approach to potential sponsors.
