L'X submits its report on social diversity

On October 14, Eric Labaye submitted his report on social inclusion to the Ministers for the Armed Forces and for Higher Education, following the assignment with which they entrusted him last June. This report proposes 10 measures to improve the School’s social diversity and double the number of scholarship students.

In June 2019, Florence Parly, Minister for the Armed Forces, and Frédéric Vidal, Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, tasked eight presidents and directors of prestigious schools to make proposals aimed at increasing the proportion of students from less privileged backgrounds in their intakes. The reports resulting from their work were submitted on Monday 14 October. Among them, Eric Labaye, President of École Polytechnique, presented a series of measures designed to improve social diversity at the School.

These proposals have the goal of doubling the number of scholarship students on the School’s programmes, and also of supporting and inspiring a significant proportion of students from less privileged backgrounds to pursue higher scientific studies.

Three areas of improvement in favour of social diversity

>The streams and entry exams
L'X continues to open up the university stream of its entrance examination and announces an increase to 50 places by 2024, compared with 28 in 2019. Bonus points granted to 3/2 will also be maintained for 5/2 scholarship candidates and all candidates will benefit from access to the reports and records of the examination in Open Data.

>Preparation and mentoring of scholarship students
The School intends to assist scholarship students in preparatory classes through support and tutoring by engineering students and mentoring by former students. It equally underlines the importance of support from the ministries in implementing the measures, such as a readjustment of regional imbalances in preparatory classes to the benefit of the provinces, an increase in the number of scholarship candidates in preparatory classes, and the creation of new dedicated streams to help them in the entrance exam preparation.

>Orientation and support of gifted students towards the sciences
This measure implemented by l'X is intended to direct more young people towards the sciences and potentially towards the School’s entrance exams. To this end, l'X wishes to intensify its existing actions within the framework of human development courses, tutoring or support to reach more than 20,000 young people by 2022, and expand its scope to include the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and the national level. A community of gifted young people aged 6 to 20, l'X Academic Fellows, could also be created and upstream action focused on secondary school teachers to promote good teaching practices and talent spotting.

The creation of a steering committee on social inclusion in higher education was announced by Frédérique Vidal. It will bring together institutions, school conferences, ministerial representatives and equality policy actors and will have the task of refining and adapting the proposals stated in the various reports submitted on 14 October. Each institution will then set itself a road map with specific goals.
