The BepiColombo probe flew over the planet Mercury and began measuring the characteristics of its magnetosphere, thanks in part to the MSA ion mass spectrometer to which the Plasma Physics Laboratory (LPP) contributed.
Alain Aspect, Professor at École Polytechnique and the Institut d'Optique Graduate School-Université Paris-Saclay, Emeritus Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and 2022 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, gave a lecture on “Quantum entanglement and the non-locality revolution”. This talk was part of the fiftieth anniversary of the X1974 graduating class and the Science Festival at École Polytechnique.
With over 10,000 m2 of floor space, the Mechanical Hub building brings together research laboratories in solid, fluid mechanics and livingmechanics from École Polytechnique and ENSTA Paris. Positioned near the new ONERA site, this strategic facility promotes academic excellence internationally.
X66 and CNRS Research Director at the Solid Mechanics Laboratory (LMS) between 1973 and 2010, Gérard Gary has just been awarded the John Rinehart Prize for his work on the dynamic behavior of materials.
Six start-ups created or run by X alumni or incubated at École Polytechique are among the winners of the I-Lab 2024 competition, including two in the Grand Prix category. They illustrate the entrepreneurial dynamism of X researchers and graduates, the now well-established multi-curricular nature of the School and the wide range of its research.
As part of the École Polytechnique’s international academic exchange program, more than sixty students from thirty excellent partner institutions across the globe have joined l’X for the start of the 2024 academic year. Students will get the opportunity to discover the French academic and scientific culture at l’X during an exchange semester. They will follow courses within the Bachelor of Science program or the Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program, depending on their specialization and level of study.
École polytechnique's traditional participation in the July 14 military parade involved 246 Cycle ingénieur polytechnicien program students, slightly fewer than in previous years, for a ceremony that was scaled back due to preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Placed under the dual theme of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation and Olympism, the 2024 parade was particularly resonant with the Polytechnique spirit.
The Cambridge Analytica scandal has shown that targeting technologies on online platforms (Google, Facebook, Tik Tok...) go beyond the simple sale of objects or services to invest in the realm of information. The work of Oana Goga, a researcher at École Polytechnique's Computer science laboratory (LIX), studies the impact of these technologies on privacy, security and the manipulation of public opinion. They have fuelled reflection on the European Union's Digital Services Act and are being continued today as part of an ERC Starting Grants fellowship.
Launched by two X alumni brothers, C12, a pioneer in the use of carbon nanotubes to build a universal quantum computer, has completed its second round of financing, raising 18 million euros. The start-up is one of five selected by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces as part of the Proqcima program to develop two prototypes of quantum computers.
Five students from École Polytechnique's "Data and Economics for Public Policy" Master's program have developed an interactive map of public health determinants down to the level of French local authorities, for the French Ministry of the Environment's Ecolab.
