École Polytechnique launches its PhD program
École Polytechnique extends its academic offer and launches a PhD program combining both Master’s and PhD. This program is designed to develop outstanding students for careers in leading academic institutions or top companies throughout the world.
In September 2016, with the support of the École Polytechnique Foundation, l’X opens a five-year long program leading to a PhD degree. Based on the Anglo-Saxon model of the PhD track, this top-level program is designed for students with high potential, having graduated from a Bachelor’s program or its equivalent, who want to be involved in tomorrow’s scientific challenges.
Students in this PhD program will benefit from École Polytechnique’s dynamic ecosystem. Since the first year of their Master’s studies, these students will be closely associated to the research activities conducted in École Polytechnique laboratories. Students involved in the PhD program will work closely with academic tutors who will provide them with individual coaching, oversee their progress and help customize their training with regards to their interests and goals. They will also be in close contact with the scientific community of Université Paris-Saclay, a major scientific and economic cluster in the South Paris region, founded by l’X and 18 other higher education and research institutions.
The first two years of the PhD program (corresponding to a MSc degree), are based on the Université Paris-Saclay Master’s programs. They are designed to provide students with the necessary tools for the successful completion of an ambitious research project supervised by an academic tutor. The following three years are fully dedicated to an intensive three-year long research project leading to a PhD degree of University Paris-Saclay. Each student in the program receives unique and individualized coaching from a recognized expert in his/her discipline. Furthermore, the students have access to scholarships funded through the generosity of donors from the École Polytechnique Foundation.
Frank Pacard, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Research, comments: "This PhD program will enable students with very high potential who are research-oriented to benefit from a privileged access to École Polytechnique laboratories during the first year of their Master’s studies on campus. The limited number of places available for this program guarantees that selected students will receive a close and individual follow-up, allowing them to build an ambitious research project. This PhD program is in line with École Polytechnique’s ambitious research strategy combining the pursuit of progress in the most fundamental aspects of science and the development of knowledge in fields of major scientific, technological and societal interest."
